What to Do If You're Involved in a Car Crash

Australian roads are as busy as ever, and if you drive your car or truck on a daily basis, you've often got to be prepared for anything. Of course, you never know whether you're going to get to your destination on time, because unexpected roadworks or other delays can occur. You've also got to be prepared for car breakdown at the most inopportune moments. However, one day you may need to deal with a much more distressing incident and may be involved in an accident of some kind. If this were to happen to you, would you know what to do?

Life Happens

It doesn't matter if you are the safest driver of all time—you can never account for the behaviour of others. Consequently, you may become involved in an accident that was not your fault, and this may cause considerable damage to your own vehicle.

In a situation like this, it's important not to panic but to go through a particular process instead. This will help you to deal with the uncertainty and the shock while safeguarding yourself and your possessions.

First Things First

If somebody was unfortunate enough to be injured in an accident like this, then your first priority is to get some support. Call an ambulance or the fire service if needed and they will send somebody out to help the person and transport them to a hospital.

You should likely also notify the police. You should think about doing this especially if the damage to your vehicle is quite extensive, and the insurance company may require an official report before they can process all the paperwork.

Clearing the Way

If at all possible, you should try and move the accident vehicles to the side of the road once you have taken a couple of photographs with your phone. This will help to record the scene of the incident and may be evidence if you need to prove who was at fault. By moving the vehicles to the side when possible, you will cause less disruption to other road users as well.

Towing Service

Next, get in touch with an accident towing service, such as Swan Towing Service, and ask them to come and collect your vehicle. Once they do so, they are required to keep it in a safe and secure compound and make sure that all your personal effects are protected as well.  Make sure that you gather all their information together with the location of the compound so you can liaise with your insurer and the accident repair team as well.
